Who Can Grow the Biggest Heirloom Tomato??

This Contest is Open to All Ambrose Family Farm CSA Members

Each CSA Member received an heirloom tomato plant in their box the week of 4/19/10.

A contest with the winner receiving a $100 prize for the heaviest heirloom grown on your Ambrose Farm Tomato plant and weighed in at the Stono Market. Have fun! Why did we have a tomato plant in the box?

On April 20, 1981, when there were baby tomatoes and bell peppers on every plant growing on our 60 Acre farm and we were anticipating a profitable harvest, Mother Nature hit us with a killing freeze-many hours of 28° followed by a killing frost in the early morning hours. We were completely wiped out-everything. There was not one plant on the entire 60 acre farm that was not killed. We had invested our normal $100K in the crop, and we would not pick even 1 lb. of produce. The freeze was East Coast Wide, so there was no back up plants available from any source, so, we sat that year out with very little opportunity to recoup our debt. This was the 1st serious financial blow we had suffered since beginning our farming career in 1976. We were not alone in the situation, but that was not at all comforting.

At that point in our lives, Pete committed to growing his own field plants – and his back up plants. He was not going to be in that position again-without plants ready for such a time. That is how we come by the supply of Heirlooms for you today. These are his back up plants and he though most of you might have fun trying to grow your own, just for fun! He’ll answer your questions, should you have some and is willing to get you started-Sterile potting soil, lots of sun, plenty of water, and lots of love.

When you harvest what you think is the biggest one, bring it to the Stono Market and we’ll weigh it for you, create your record, and at the end of the season, we’ll award the winner of the heaviest tomato $100. Get the kids involved, take lots of pictures, and keep a few records on what and how you grew your tomato so we can all learn from the winner. But most of all, have fun.

Here's where Farmer Pete shows you how to prune your plant!

Name Our Goats Contest

Ambrose Family Farm wants to introduce the newest members of our family Ashley, the dark colored goat, and Vanilla, the light colored goat. These cute goats are both middle age Nanny (girl) goats. They needed a home and there just so happened to be plenty of room on our farm. We don't have any information about what kind of goats they are, but we do know that they are the kind that LOVE TO EAT!

The Maher children named Ashley and little Miss Ollard named Vanilla in the recent "Name Our Goat Contest". Thanks kids-forgive the pun-you did a great job.

There were lots of entries for this naming contest, and the decision was really hard for Farmer Pete and Farmer Sam, but after much discussion, the names were chosen. Now, we are in the process of choosing new collars and having special name tags made so you won't get confused anytime you are on the farm and choose to visit these two special girls. Remember, they like green things to eat, so when you visit, try to take them a little treat-like a small branch off a tree that has lots of leaves on it, a leaf off the broccoli or turnips, or maybe a little sticker bush from the side of the ditch. Goats love to eat green things that grow taller than grass because they don't really like to bend down to eat.
