Take & Bake

Special Foods We are Known For

Our "signature items" at Stono Farm Market & Tomato Shed Cafe are available either for lunch or for you to "Take and Bake" at home.

Tomato Pie: A casserole made from fresh tomatoes, sweet onions, & basil topped with a mixture of fine cheddar cheeses and Mayonaise. It is baked until light brown and bubbly!  The receipt is an old one that was tweeked to perfection in 1991 by my dear friend Mazie Belser to feed the masses, not just a family of 4. Now, it is one of the area's most popular casseroles.

Pimiento Cheese: We make our own Pimiento Cheese!  A blend of Vermont Extra Sharp Cheddar, Sharp  American Cheddar, and Roasted Red Pimiento Peppers.  We spice some of it up with hot peppers!  It is addictive, so be careful.

Shrimp Paste: A blend of finely ground shrimp, onions, peppers, garlic, and spices that makes the most delicious spread for crackers or sandwiches.

Crab Dip: Fresh crab meat, onion, peppers, cheddar cheese, and horseradish blended to make the perfect hors d'Oeuvres spread around.  Being mostly crab meat makes this spread different from anything else in the area that is call "crab..." because there is a minimal amount of crab in the mixture.  But ours is "for real" crab you can see and taste.  Try it next time you are in-there is usually a sample available.

Crab Cakes: Our most popular entree is available for you to "Take and Bake" at home-but the Crab Cakes are best fried in a slight amount of vegetable oil or a light spraying of "Pam".  The secret to having them stay together is to brown them good on one side before flipping them over.  We make a delicious tarter sauce that's a great accent. It too is available.  Our crab cakes were voted best in Charleston area 3 years in a row!

Shrimp and Crab Casserole: A beautiful combination of fresh shrimp, crab meat, rice, green peppers, and tomato juice.  This hardy casserole is delightful served with fresh asparagus, squash, and a green salad.  It only takes 30 minutes to prepare and will delight everyone.

Butter Beans: Available June, July, and November fresh, shelled, by the bushel or by the pound.  Any other time, we have the blanched and frozen, by the pint or quart, ready for you to throw in a pot of boiling water and serve in 15 minutes.  If you prefer, you can get them fully cooked, frozen or ready to heat and eat.  The special thing is that we have both "green" and "speckled" beans!

Rio Bertolini's Handmade Pasta Dishes: Rio (Brian) Bertolini makes his pasta in our kitchen and offers it for sale exclusivly at Stono Farm Market.  The list of his varieties of pasta, ravioli, sauces, butters, and lasagnas is endless (almost).  These items must remain frozen, so bring a cooler with you if you plan to purchase them and have an hour ride to home.  But no matter what the occasion, your meal will be perfect with Rio's pastas and sauces as well as pretty darn quick.
